Glutaraldehyde

Unless you're a chemistry major, the name won't mean much. But glutaraldehyde is a chemical that's caused health problems for people working in the health industries.

Glutaraladehyde has two main uses. One is in the developing of X-ray films. The other is in the sterilising of medical and dental equipment.

People using the chemical have suffered a number of health effects - dermatitis, rhinitis and sore throats, eye irritation and occupational asthma. Some people also go on to suffer from generalised symptoms such as memory loss, difficulty in concentrating, and tiredness and fatigue.

The Department of Labour has published guidelines for the safe use of glutaraldehyde, requiring control measures such as the use of ventilation systems and personal protective equipment (gloves, respirators, goggles, etc). Even with these precautions, however, a few people still become 'sensitised' and suffer a reaction when exposed to the minutest concentration of the chemical. These people unfortunately have no option but to change their jobs.
